> Rankin Bottoms, Cocke county's exceptional wildlife area, has many visitors > through the year. They come to go fishing, paddling, birdwatching, walking, > hunting in season, or just to get away from it all. Douglas Lake rises into > Rankin every summer, then recedes and leaves behind floating litter from the > Nolichucky, Pigeon and French Broad Rivers. There are no trash containers in > the area; and some careless visitors leave cans, bottles and and containers > behind. Litter cleanup is done by volunteers only; The Rankin Bottoms > Project has sponsored annual pickup events there since 2001. This year, > locals were joined by folks from four chapters of the Tennessee > Ornithological Society and from the Chota Canoe Club, based in Knoxville. > Eighteen hardy souls, from 6 East Tennessee counties, gathered on Saturday, > December 9, to eliminate trash along the Coal Chute Road at Rankin Bottoms. > Standing behind one of the days' litter piles are, from left to right: Linda > Morrison, Tony King, Patty Ford, Eddy Whitson, Rick Knight, Patti Berrier, > Ron Lapp, Rose Lapp, David Kirschke, Charlene Cureton (representing Keep > Cocke County Beautiful), Roger Arnwine, Linda Wright, Mary Rule, Steve Kopp, > Karen Catlett, and Leslie Gibbens, event coordinator for the Rankin Bottoms > Project. .
