This afternoon (1 Sep) a Piping Plover was present at Rankin Bottoms, on upper Douglas Lake in Cocke Co in east Tenn. Also seen were: Great Egret - 60+ Little Blue Heron - 2 im Black-cr. Night-Heron - 10+ Semipalmated Plover - 5 Lesser Yellowlegs - 1 Semipalmated Sandpiper - 40+ Least Sandpiper - 40+ Western Sandpiper - 10+ Pectoral Sandpiper - 60+ Stilt Sandpiper - 3 Short-billed Dowitcher - 3 N. Shoveler - 4 Blue-wg. Teal - 6 Osprey - 3+ The lake level is at or about 985 ft, which is the magic number for a combination of enough mudflats and accessibility on foot (boots for mud recommended) for good birding. Conditions should get better over the next several days as the lake drops more.
