Photo by Laura O'Bryan Chris O'Bryan, a Masters of Science degree candidate, successfully defended his thesis today, April 15, 2014, at the Clemson University School of Agricultural, Forest & and Natural Resources and was "passed" for his research effort. He will be awarded the degree at spring commencement. His parents attended the exit seminar and final oral examination this afternoon. The final presentation of his research and oral defense with the faculty was about four hours in duration. A crowd of 50 people were on hand for the defense, including the Dean of the College. The evening featured students and guests hosted for a party at a local pub followed by his main faculty inviting Chris and select members out for an evening dinner. Chris' thesis is "Persistence of a vulnerable semi-aquatic turtle in an intensively-managed forest landscape." He has focused on the Spotted Turtle (Clemmys guttata) movement patterns. O'Bryan has been offered a heavily-funded doctorate program at Michigan State University, following a three-day interview and tour of the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife. He was among the finalist for the position when he went to East Lansing, MI earlier this month to interview with faculty from Michigan State, the University of Michigan-Flint and a research Ph.D. from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. Also in the mix for his doctorate, Chris has been looking at graduate studies at Purdue University and the University of Georgia. Meanwhile, the Clemson Department of Biological Sciences has offered him enrollment for a doctorate program to teach in that department for a couple of semesters if he would like to further explore other doctorate programs. Michigan State has given him a couple of weeks to decided if he wants to accept their doctorate contract. He earned a B.S. degree in Biology from Austin Peay State University at Clarksville, TN in 2011 where he was the top Senior Biology Student and graduated with honors. He has long been associated with the Bristol Bird Club and worked as a naturalist at the Steele Creek Park Nature Center in Bristol TN while growing up in Shady Valley, TN and Piney Flats, TN where his parents live.
