The attendance at the Bristol Bird Club's April meeting was down by more than half of recent numbers tonight (15 April 2014), despite the fact it was a night that featured a very good program and many upcoming, exciting and highly-anticipated events. Mary Erwin present an excellent four-part video on the North American population and research concerning the Dark-eyed Junco. It was not only entertaining and fascinating but included a wealth of knowledge about the relationships among the many types of juncos and the research which supports the findings. The 2014-2015 Nominating Committee presented its slate of officers which will be voted on at the May BBC meeting along with any nominations made from the floor. John Moyle chaired the committee and presented the following slate: President Lois Cox First Vice-President Kevin Blaylock Second Vice-President Bill Grigsby (Program Chair) Secretary Faye Wagers Treasurer Judy Roach A program Committee was recommended: Bill Grigsby (chair) Marty Huber Joann Detta Barney Brehl Jeanie Brehl A field trip Committee was recommended: John Moyle (chair) Michele Sparks John Whinery Richard Lewis Bill Grigsby announced the dates of three field trips to be conducted by BBC at the July Funfest in Kingsport, TN. The Sleeping Owl Brewery will be a co-sponsor with the BBC for the bird walks and pay the commercial sponsorship fee for the event. BBC will conduct an Earth Day event under the International Migratory Bird Event template. It will be held this Saturday at 8 a.m. at the East Stone Commons behind PetSmart in Kingsport. Please come out to assist with this event. It is very important as part of the conservation effort for birds and bird migration. John Hay talked about the field trips and BBC overnight weekend to be held at the Natural Tunnel State Park as part of our structured agreement with the Virginia state park system. The dates are May 15-17. Adam Alley and Josh Alley (brothers and student members of BBC) were awarded a grant from the Lee R. Herndon Memorial Fund to help mentor their efforts as persistent and dedicated birders and club members. They were presented a check to fund the purchase of the recently-published second edition of Sibley's Guide to birds which came out March 11. John Moyle announced the 10 May 2014 BBC field trip to Winged Deer Park on Boone Lake at Johnson City.
