January 1, 2008 I spent much of today out birding, starting in Unicoi County and working my way back to Greene. Despite gusting wind for much of the time, I was fortunate to find several notable species. An abbreviated list includes the following: Gadwall (65 Greene); American Wigeon (Greene); American Black Duck (11 Greene); Northern Shoveler (3 Gravel Woods Road (Greene)); Northern Pintail (3 Wal-Mart Distribution Center (Greene)); Green-winged Teal (2 Unicoi, 1 Greene); Ring-necked Duck (5 Greene); Hooded Merganser (2 Gravel Woods Road (Greene)); Wild Turkey (34 Greene); Pied-billed Grebe (2 Erwin Linear Park (Unicoi)); Northern Harrier (Greene); Sharp-shinned Hawk (Greene); Cooper's Hawk (Washington); Red-shouldered Hawk (1 Erwin Linear Park (Unicoi), 1 Highway 340 near Turner Lane (Greene)); Eurasian Collared-Dove (4 adjacent to West Greene High School (Greene)); Common Raven (2 Highway 107 0.2 mile west of Pleasant Hill Road (Greene)); Horned Lark (Baughard Hill Road (Greene)); White-crowned Sparrow (6 Greene); Purple Finch (8 Greene).
