This winter, Southern Appalachian Raptor Research has partnered with NC Wildlife Resources Commission to assist researchers investigating the population status and distribution of Golden Eagles. The adult bird pictured at the left was caught on camera last Friday feeding at Big Bald Mountain in Yancey County, NC. Golden Eagle sightings have been recorded from three of the past four years of autumn Big Bald Hawkwatch surveys. This site is on the state line with Tennessee and North Carolina, is about 5 miles northeast of Sams Gap and I-26 along the Unicoi County line. This is directly south of Johnson City, TN/ Researchers from West Virginia University have developed protocols for 'trapping' Golden Eagles with trail cameras as they feed on deer carcasses placed in remote areas of national forests, state game lands and private property. This research effort is gathering data in 14 eastern states and has recently 'captured' Golden Eagles as far south as Mississippi and Alabama. Wallace Coffey Bristol, TN
