June 14-24, 2008

Bird notes from Greene County for the last eleven days:

Northern Bobwhite (1-6 (numerous sites), June 15, 18, 20-23)

Cooper's Hawk (1, June 21)

Eurasian Collared-Dove (1, adjacent to West Greene High School, June 21.
Forty-eighth consecutive month at this site.)

Great Horned Owl (1, Holly Creek Road 0.5 mile from East Church Street, June
24. Perched at dusk and harassed by mockingbird--quite amusing.)

Barred Owl (1, Paint Creek Recreation Area, June 22)

Whip-poor-will (4, Hurricane Gap Road, June 22)

Red-headed Woodpecker (1, adjacent to Kinser Park boat launch, June 15)

Willow Flycatcher (1, Joachime Bible Refuge unit of Lick Creek Bottoms Wildlife
Management Area, June 22. Has been observed at this site during the breeding
season sporadically over most of the last decade.)

Warbling Vireo (1, intersection Moon Creek Road / Oakes Bewley Lane, June 14.
This highly localized species is infrequently observed in Greene County.)

Common Raven (3, Vulcan Materials Company quarry on Highway 70 1 mile north of
Highway 11-E, June 15. Also observed by Don Holt. Two birds were in sleek,
clean plumage, with no obvious signs of molt. The third was quite tattered
looking, with many feathers missing along the trailing edges of both wings and
throughout the tail. In addition to hearing typical adult calls, we also heard
a higher-pitched, crowlike call consistent with one sound made by juveniles. I
consulted Rick Knight for info on raven molt, and he supplied the following
from "Identification Guide to North American Birds," by Peter Pyle: ". . .
adults undergo a complete pre-basic molt from May-October, which would include
replacing all wing and tail feathers. Hatch-year ravens undergo a partial
pre-basic molt in June-October, with no molt of primaries, secondaries, or tail
feathers." In other words, the molt pattern that Don and I observed suggests
that we may have seen two juveniles and one adult. The quarry where we
observed the birds is located at 1300-1400 feet in elevation and is off-limits
to the public, except for the parking area around the entrance and the office
just inside.)

Cliff Swallow (1, June 15)

Summer Tanager (1, June 15)

Savannah Sparrow (1, June 15)

Dickcissel (4, June 21--2 on Green Road 0.1-0.2 mile south of Lick Creek, 2 at
the Joachime Bible Refuge. Eleventh consecutive summer at JBR.)
