A group of about thirty birders turned out for an excellent
meeting with the Bristol Bird Club Tuesday.

Dr. Phil Shelton gave a neat talk about his research of
seabirds in the Pacific at Johnston Atoll, as part of the
Smithsonian Institution team.

He is one of the more popular speakers and one of the
region's best known and experienced research ornithologists.
Dr. Shelton has spoken to BBC many times over the years,
including his last in 2004. He joined members again for
dinner at the Mad Greek, where he last had dinner with
our birders in Oct. 2003. He is, perhaps, the most highly
recognized authority on the high elevation distribution of
birds in the Southern Appalachians.

It was determined that the BBC will compile two of the club's
Christmas Bird Counts on Wednesday, Jan 27, at 7:30 p.m.
at the Bristol Public Library. The president will check
Wednesday to secure the facility for that date. Members
will compile both the Kingsport CBC (compiler Bill Grigsby)
and the Bristol CBC (compiler Richard Lewis). An earlier
compilation meeting was called off due to inclement weather.

A planning meeting for field trips is scheduled for Monday, Jan 25,
at the Min Dynasty Buffet on the Volunteer Parkway in Bristol
Tennessee.

John Moyle has volunteered to teach a class on birds with a
presentation for the Wolf Hill F.A.N. Club (senior citizens) in
Abingdon on Feb. 8.

The Johnson City Public Library will have an EXPLORERS
program for kindergarten-5th graders on Thurs, Jan 28th, at
the library in Johnson City. The Bristol Bird Club will conduct
the program with Bill Grigsby being the club's expert birder.
The event will be held at 4 p.m. and registration is required.
To participate call, 423-434-4458. The library will have a
selection of bird books available as well as the new BBC
color flyer.

Materials are on hand for the planning of the 2012 joint
meeting of the Virginia Society of Ornithology and the
Tennessee Ornithological Society which will be sponsored
by the Bristol Bird Club and held locally. The president will
soon be reviewing the planning meeting guide book from
VSO and appointing a committee as well as chairperson.

Jennifer Kennedy surprised Wallace Coffey with a birthday
cake which she had ready for the earlier compilation meeting.
He just passed his 70th birthday and called the cake celebration
the club's way of launching him towards his 80's. Members
enjoyed standing around and sharing the cake (complete
with a big Northern Cardinal for decoration) and visiting at
the end of the meeting.

Among those on hand for the meeting (* indicates those attending
dinner at the Mad Greek prior to the event) included:
Bill Grigsby*, Rick Knight*, Ruth Clark, Mary Clark, Carolyn Coffey*,
Wallace Coffey*, Janet Martin, Lisa Tyler, Sybil Williams*, Charlie
Powell, Roy Knispel*, Judy Roach*, Wilma Boy, Lois Cox, Ed Burke,
Steve McClellan, Lola McClellan, R. Neal Henson, Jean Henson,
Michele Sparks, Mary Erwin*, Michele Villeneuve, Don Leech,
Paul Freiberg, Tom Hunter*, Aubrie Abernethy, John Hay*,
Phil Shelton* and Jennifer Kennedy*.
