Twenty-five birders turned out with the Bristol Bird Club this weekend (Fri-Sat-Sun) at the Rikemo Lodge south of St. Paul in Russell County, VA for a fabulous three days of birding. Among the group was a birder from Cleveland, Ohio, who flew down for the weekend to participate, and two members of the Buchanan County Bird Club who also helped out. The event featured 19 birders canoeing almost seven miles in four hours to list birds along the winding and beautiful section of the Clinch River from Cleveland to Carterton. The river birding was made possible by The Nature Conservancy of Virginia who provided eight canoes and a river guide. One birder brought his own canoe for a total of nine. At the request of The Nature Conservancy staff, we were asked to compile a list of birds for the areas we frequented. It was decided that one list would include "birds found from while canoeing along the river" with a second list being those "found at The Nature Conservancy's 100-acre Rikemo Lodge preserver" and the third including birds seen "elsewhere in the area" during the weekend.
