Bristol Birders, After a wonderful weekend of canoeing and birding with the Bristol Bird Club along the Clinch River, Michelle and I decided to spend the rest of Sunday birding the area around High Knob (4,165 feet at summit) and High Knob Lake. The second bird we saw after getting to the Lake Trail parking lot turned out to be a Blackburnian Warbler. As we started down the Lake Loop Trail we quickly realized that we were "not in Kansas anymore Toto." The high-count species for the day turned out to be Black-throated Blue Warblers (12), Chestnut-sided Warblers (11), Canada Warblers (6), and Veerys (11) - definitely not your average bird walk around the neighborhood. Also a day with twice as many Blue-headed Vireos than Red-eyed Vireos is one for my record book. Overcast skies and cool temperatures kept the birds singing most of the day and the haunting song of the Veery was heard at almost every turn. High Knob is located in Wise County close to the town of Norton, VA. I would highly recommend this area to any local birders. Our daily count is listed below. Also all of the Chestnut-sided Warblers were located near the summit where it is more open and not around the wooded lake. ************************************************* BRISTOL BIRDS NET LIST This is a regional birding list sponsored by the Bristol Bird Club to facilitate communications between birders and bird clubs of Southwest Virginia and Northeast Tennessee.
