Thanks for the feedback. I agree that backtranslating isolated words isn't
that difficult and that there can be defaults for any ambiguities. (There
are quite a few ambiguities related to the use of shortforms.)
Here are some of the situations I found to be more difficult than
backtranslating isolated ordinary words in EBAE. Stripping off leading
punctuation and indicators and trailing punctuation prior to identifying
isolated words. Identifying joined words. Implementing the effect of
indicators and determining their proper scope including whether or not the
scope extends to the next line of formatted braille. Dealing with the
special rules for the scopes of embedded indicators including those for
alphanumeric items. Abbreviations with embedded periods. Embedded
parentheses. The many semantically different items including true compound
words, spelled-out words, and letter words that contain hyphens. Resolving
when dots 56 is a non-Latin word indicator rather than a letter sign.
Determining when dot 4 is print symbol indicator rather than part of a
multi-cell symbol.
I discovered a lot of these more difficult problems when someone suggested
that I try backtranslating the brf version of the official EBAE rules which
you can get from the BANA site. I would suggest that you not attempt this
unless you have a lot of time on your hands!
