If I use the quick search and put the author's name in quotes, when I get
the results, books by that author are always at the top. Titles work the
same way, if I put them in quotes and make sure the title is accurate. I
get oodles of results, but the one I am looking for is always first.

It's the new advanced search, which many are wild about and many are not
wild about. Try using the advanced search with the author name for best
results, is what I have found.
