Hi,coming in mid way, but I cannot imagine any logical reason for bookshare to mirror the excelente work of Project Gutenberg. simply send those who need it to the site, their public domain material is better quality anyway, features a far more extensive collection, and if memory serves can be had in html.
Why duplicate something that does not serve Bookshare in any case? Karen On Sun, 2 Sep 2007, Grandma Cindy wrote:
Yes, if PG books can be read in Braille or Daisy. Otherwise, maybe they should be in our collection. Anyway, if I can find the book request that caused me to ask Lisa about it a while ago I'll mention here that it is available on PG. Maybe I did--can't remember--senior moment. smile Cindy --- Dan Beaver <dbeaver888@xxxxxxxxx> wrote:I don't understand why we should use Bookshare resources to house books from PG when those same books can be had from PG's site. PG doesn't charge for their books since they are in the public domain. Wouldn't it be more effective to point folks who want those books to go to the PG site? That way they would have access to Bookshare and also to PG resources. Just my 2 cents worth. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Grandma Cindy" <popularplace@xxxxxxxxx> To: <bookshare-discuss@xxxxxxxxxxxxx>; "Lisa Friendly" <lisaf@xxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Sunday, September 02, 2007 7:54 PM Subject: [bookshare-discuss] Re: FW: Gutenberg BooksI agree with Jim about not doing wholesale taking, butif someone wants an old book that isn't otherwhere available and is from there, we could take it. I validated somethibng on bookshare--don't knowwherethe submission came from, but the only place Icouldfind a book to compare was PG--it was Prince of Sknners. I don't remember what the request was--I'll checkourwish list and see if I can find it and resend ittoyou, Lisa. Because they are public domain, nobody is breaking any rules submitting them to Bookshare.org. And, the Gutenberg team can be relied upon when they decide something is public domain (the question iscomplexand we have to be careful). They are very supportive of our work, andwe didn¹t license the books from them, we just did them the courtesy of touching base before using them. We¹re not really competitors: they do agreatjob on public domain, and as Lisa notes, we¹re working on copyrighted material almost exclusively (which Gutenberg generally can¹t). So, we complement each other We just haven¹t allocated the effort to convertmoreGutenberg books since our original launch five years ago. We¹ve notgottena lot of requests for them. Another disadvantage is that the Gutenberg books are generally unformatted ASCII text. When we did the bigimport,we just inserted page breaks every 60 lines or so. If it¹s of big interest to our users, we¹d probably do another big import. But, it wouldfloodthe new book listing with a lot of boring books!
