I generally prefer to read Bookshare books in braille, but I know someone who
enjoys reading lots of them on her Book Sense. She also brought up Roger's
point about not having a human reader put their own interpretation on the text.

I know I'm in the minority on this, but I don't think the voices on the Book
Sense are any better than, say the Eloquence that JAWS uses or that I use with
my Window Eyes. Actually, I don't think they're as good. Eloquence certainly
doesn't mispronounce as many things as Kate or Paul on the Book Sense. The
voices also have a kind of choppy quality that makes it harder to read at
higher speed than the smoother Eloquence voice. Of course, I don't speak for
anyone else, but Lissi has told me that while she likes reading on the Book
Sense, she would rather it use the same voice as her JAWS does than the ones it
comes with.

My opinion only. The computer voice, especially the acapella voice (sp?)
available as a download from Bookshare is great, but navigating around victor
soft is a challenge for one used to the ease of the stream. Also, who wants to
carry a computer around with them. I have the Book Sense from G W Micro, and
like the voice better. Booksense is expensive, and keep a safety pin attached
to your lanyard, so you can do the resets which are, all to often necessary,
but the voice is better. The speaker is more powerful, too, so less need for
externals.

Hi, I'm new to Bookshare and this list. I must admit that I'm somewhat
spoiled when it comes to listening to audiobooks and have gotten too used to
very competent audio narrators. I've not done much listening to books in text
format on my Stream which is probably why the thought of listening to a long
book with the Stream's TTS voice seems daunting at best. What device do most
users on this list use when listening to their Bookshare books? I did download
the Victor Reader software and the voices on the computer are obviously much
better than those on the Stream for listening due to the higher computing
muscle but I was just curious what others on this list use? Thanks for any
comments.
