Melody,
Here is what a beta means. When a program is coded, or changed, they test in house, looking for bugs. Then they do further testing with more people involved. At this point, when the new code looks stable, its then released as an official updated version.

Those who volunteer to do beta testing need to report anything that appears to be a bug, and must provide as much information as possible. This helps the programmers to run down the bugs and fix them

Beta testing is not for everyone. If one expects a fully working and stable program, then beta testing is not for him/her. In the case of the current beta testing, the braille translation tables are not perfect so the brave beta testers search out the bugs and report them.

If I recall correctly, the beta version end in an odd number, while the official release ends in an even number.
