I think that's why a couple of folks have suggested that charging capabilities take place through the USB connection, as with some MP3 players and the like. It would help offset this drain, which really is fierce.

Subject: [bookport] suggestion for transfer software

It seems from my unscientific observations that the process of transferring files to the Book Port drains the battery like nothing else. Transferring RFB&d books is an especially slow process, more so if you want to invoke pause reduction or speech compression. The pre-processing of the book takes by far the longest. It would be nice if that could be done without the Book Port being connected, so that only the USB 1.1 somewhat slow transfer needed to take place while the battery was being drained.
