OK you all, I have one more backup type idea which may prove much more efficient than a true backup, which as has been pointed out, would be quite slow. What if, every time you sent a file to the bookport, a line was added to a special log file kept by the transfer software giving the path of the file being sent. This would take no time at all and would be quietly maintained by the transfer software. Now, down the road, your card gets lost or hosed or whatever and you are frantic to recreate your bookport close to what it was before the card crash. There could be an option "recreate card" in the tab order which would simply use the log file to resend everything it lists back to the bookport. Of course, files deleted from the computer or put directly on the card bypassing the transfer software wouldn't be included, but too bad. Also, you wouldn't have the bookmarks but so what. You could get most if not all of your files and folders back just the way you had them. The cool thing about this feature is that until you need it, it takes no time really to maintain, keeps a running record of what you have sent to the BookPort, and is always there, ready for use if needed.
