Hi Pete:

This has been a known bug since the inception of the Book Port,
however, we've never been able to correct it.  So, we just have to work
around it, which is the suggestion to let the unit shut off.

I'm glad you got the key strokes for the Reset.  Yes, sometimes it is
tricky to get those key strokes, when using speech.

Pamela,

I guess I am sometimes a bit impatient and like to move around quickly
by
economizing keystroeks!  I have finally learned to wait until the audio
file
is stopped before deleting it.

On the other hand, this might be a nit, but if possible, it would be
nice if
this behavior could be rectified.  The user shouldn't be able to press
any
combination of buttons that would crash the unit.  If deleting a file
while
reading gets the unit in a dysfunctional state, then this action
shouldn't
be allowed.

By the way, thanks for mentioning the "2+B" reset combination.  I've
never
been able to get this to work because I thought the key combination
was
"2+E".  Both "B" and "E" sound very similar when you're listening to a
speech synthesizer quickly!  I'll have to sharpen up my listening
ears.

Try waiting for about 15 seconds after deleting your audio file and
let
the unit shut down--you should hear the double beep to indicate shut
down.  Once you've gotten that, then see if the speech has returned to
normal.  My guess is that it will.  You can also try a Reset with 2
plus
b.

Here is a problem which is fairly (although not absolutely)
reproducible
when deleting audio files.

1.      Play and audio file (generally I have them sped up by about 1.5
times if that makes a difference)
2.      While the audio file is playing, delete the file by hitting the
"b"
and "e" keys simultaneously.
3.      Often this results in the audio file being deleted (as it
should
be), but the speech becomes crackly and/or dies.
4.      When this happens I generally have to take out the batteries to
reboot the unit in order to get the speech working properly.
5.      Sometimes (but not always) when this happens, I can recover the
speech quality by moving to another audio file and playing that file.
