Thanks Gary!!

I found it and it even has a trial version available.

Do you know if it allows for inserting control characters into the document? I like the fact that it includes a macro feature.

Thanks again,

Hi Norm. There is a very good text editor called TextPad you can find on the Web. I believe it is about $40, has a very good search and replace feature, can load files of any size, and works very well with Jaws.

Walt,
Please tell me more about kedit. Is it a DOS program? Do you use a screen reader? I still run several DOS programs on an older computer using the old DEC talk hardware board. Of course I also use a windows computer running Windows XP.

I am willing to buy an editor if it is accessible to me. I used DOS quite a bit in the old days, but I have never used UNIX or its derivitives.

thanks again for your information,

I'm pretty sure that hex 0C resolves to ^L, but I'm not sure if this is what
Word uses or not. It might use it for a _hard_ page break, so if the normal
page break isn't working, try inserting a hard page break instead. However,
it seems to me that when you save a file in Word as text, virtually all
formatting is removed and this very well may include things like page
breaks.

As to what I use, it's an editor that I've used for many years called Kedit
(pronounced kay-edit). It's not for everyone, it costs real money and isn't
free, but as an old mainframe programmer from the IBM VM days, it mimics the
old Xedit program that I'd been so used to in that environment and I can't
function on a computer without it. It's the only editor I ever use except
when fancy formatting is required, in which case I will break down and use
Word, although I normally can't stand it (particularly for plain text
files).

Walt, I guess the problem is that I am trying to use MS Word. I became weary of using the Millennium 40 because it is so slow. What do you use for the editing?

What control code corresponds with the hex code you use for the page break?
Is there another way to enter control codes while in MS Word, without
just selecting them from the dialog box??

I also use an older computer running DOS. While I have used the EDIT
function to edit files, I have never used it to search and replace
either text or codes. I don't know if it is possible to insert
control codes with that program, do you know how that works?

Thanks for your help,
norm gardner
