You asked whether getting a defaults restored announcement after so short a
time would be battery related.
I'm no electrical engineer, but surely this device has only so much
tolerance for voltage drops, and if you're using cheap batteries, which will
be subject to voltage drops, the Book Port probably just can't handle the
kind of drop those batteries allowed. That's my off-the-cuff guess.
