Hi David and list:

Some agencies are certainly guilty as you described. But in fairness, they are only doing what people can't or won't do for themselves because APH doesn't prevent any individual from buying a bookport or anything else they want directly if they wish. I have been guilty of paying a bit more to get something from an agency that had what I needed in stock rather than wait for it to be shipped from overseas. It is a decision I make at the time, based on how urgently I require the material. I'm also aware that state agencies often have these deals locked in with certain vendors and the same vendors are also expected (according to state contracts) that they should support the items they've successfully sold though the vendor seldom has the knowledge or experience to accommodate. I confess I hadn't heard of this happening in the case of book ports, but nothing surprises me any more.

Cheers,
Dave

No David, it isn't that blind folks are made of money but the goverment agencies are, and producers of technology for the blind want to grab as big a piece of that money as they can. Now, I will say that that is not necessarily the case when it comes to APH, but it certainly is with the majority of companies producing products for the blind and visually impaired.

If you think that most products for the blind are priced with the hope of helping blind people to afford them then you had better think again.

What bothers me is when I see a certain access technology vendor who charges $150 over the list price for a Book Port because they are the only vendor who has it on state contract. That means if the state agency for the blind wants to buy a Book Port they have to pay a premium price of $550 for a Book Port that APH sells for a retail price of $395. I call that irresponsible rip off by the vendor.

: Hi Gary and list:
:
: I've changed the subject to better reflect the discussion. I agree with you.
:
: I listened to the podcast describing the BP2. While it offers definite
: differences to the current model, it being released doesn't change the way I
: use my current model, which I'm very happy with. I'm sorry that Suzanne
: feels cheated, but that's the way the cookie crumbles sometimes. I was
: cheated every time I could have sent a text message but didn't for lack of : an accessible phone. I tried doing a little complaining about it, but found : that does no good. I learned my lesson and bought an accessible phone. It
: cost me more, but everyone knows blind people are made of money anyway.
: *lol* If you believe that, I'll rent you my mountain top retreat on the
: Mid-Atlantic Ridge. *lol*

: Cheers,
