It's clear enough, but the high frequencies are squashed, and there is no
excuse for that nowadays in my view.

Ive never had a book, which was hissy and scratchy that was format 4.  Now,
I have had other formats such as 1, 2, and 3 have horrible sound.  I will
never listen to a format 1 book, you can barely make out the words, the
sound quality is so horrible.  You may be right that it's not quite CD
quality, but format 4 is quite clear.  I have no complaint about it.  -----
