_The Once and Future King_ by T. H. White read by Neville Jason It's been years since I read this, and it was a joy to do again, and this time in audio format. Young Arthur, generally known as the Wart, had been brought up in Sir Ector's castle on the edge of the Forest Sauvage alongside Ector's son Kay. It was mostly a good life--but it became far more interesting when Sir Ector found himself hiring Merlin, a magician who'd been living deep in the forest with his creatures and his owl Archimedes, as the boys' tutor. But for some reason Merlin saves his special lessons for Arthur, who finds himself being turned into a variety of different creatures so as to better understand the world. But perhaps the most difficult--and dangerous--lesson the boy learns is how to think! England is very dangerous in too many places, for the general thinking is that those who have the might have the right to do as they please at everyone else's expense. Can one idealistic boy grow into the kind of king who can turn that situation around? How about using might in the defense of right instead? How does one coax others to channel their might so as to make the world a better place? Perhaps Arthur can do it.... White's interpretation of the Arthurian legends is so much fun, and Neville Jason does such a wonderful job of narrating the book! He is able to capture White's humor and pathos so very well, adding to the joy of reading this. Definitely a volume to rejoice in, this edition contains all five books into which the original as divided. I got it from Audible. It is quite long, coming as it does in six sections, but it is so delightful to read that one does not begrudge the length! Definitely one of the best bargains I've gotten from Audible, it's a book I recommend to everyone! Bonnie L. Sherrell Teacher at Large "Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgment.
