Excellent comment Mike! I like the explanation of how our minds work. As an
avian rehabber, it's been often excruciatingly hard to keep my mouth shut
when dealing with people who harm birds. Apathy in regards to birds'
plights is sadly pervasive and human intervention in their lives often
comes with sad consequences. Eventually I learned to find compassion for
those who harm birds without intent and in ignorance, and to not to judge
and just help. Today I consider what I do an act of compassion for birds
AND people. Waiting to speak can be so hard, but very important, and the
kind, respectful thing to do.

I might add, for all you knee-jerkers out there (and it is a natural
response that arises from the reptilian part of our brains). The
first response is rarely coming from the thinking part of our brain
and may not be the best response. So, give yourself some time for
reflection.
I have both OBOL and BOO set to vacation. What that means is I have
to go to the archive https://www.freelists.org/archive/obol
to read stuff. I can scroll past the topics I'm not interested in
or the posters who sometimes trigger a limbic response. It is also
more of a chore for me to respond and the thought of the extra effort
to respond helps me assess whether what I have to say actually has
value or is just a kvetch.
Social media is designed to exploit our limbic brain so we'll buy
stuff. The trolling, thoughtless bullying and faceless mob stuff are
unintended consequences.
But most of us also have cerebral cortises and are capable of, with
a bit of reflection and self-awareness, controlling our baser instincts
and behaving like the rational animals we claim to be.
