I realize most of you on this email list are Bobsy Sports Racer enthusiasts.
However, some of you are aware of the Bobsy Formula Ford restoration project.
So, I thought I'd bring everyone up-to-date on its progress. Bottom line:
It saw its first on-track day since 1984 last weekend.
Just last week I was able to put the final touches on restoring the Bobsy
Little Caesars "Pizza-Pizza" Formula Ford, namely the final suspension setup.
Then last weekend, Saturday Feb. 2nd, there happened to be an open-track
test day at High Plains Raceway. It was was a gloriously wonderful sunny 61
degree day! Perfect. So, I thought why not check out the results of the
project?
With much fear and trepidation, I took the car out for its inaugural on-track
session. GREAT NEWS and a huge relief to me, it performed perfectly, no
issues, and a pleasure to drive. Only a few little minor “punch list” items
(e.g. it needed a little 3/8” hole in the fiberglass body to more easily
adjust the idle screw, throttle pedal was a bit too low.). But aside from
those little things, the car ran and handled perfectly. Whew!
This was almost exactly one year after acquiring the car from Gene Leasure in
Arizona (Thanks Apex-Speed). It was a big project, but well worth it from a
satisfaction standpoint. (Not so much financially. :-).) In addition to
the above link devoted to the car's actual restoration, you may recall that a
new page on the Bobsy Registry was created and devoted to the ownership
history of the TWO Bobsy FF's known to still exist (out of maybe four that
were made). Much of the "fun" of this project was being able to contact
virtually all of the dozen or so past owners of the car when re-creating its
history. Pretty cool stuff.
So, as so well put in the Frankenstein movies, "IT'S ALIVE, IT'S
ALIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
Cheers,
Bob Alder
