Like I've told you guys before this guy was/is my inspiration, and partly why I rode up and down Phakisa's main straight last year.

Blind British Soldier Billy Baxter Rides Donington

By Gary Gas

Billy Baxter, a icon to many disabled people takes another step up the World Record ladder with a lap of the Donington Circuit, last weekend to raise awareness.

Billy currently holds the Blind Solo World Land Speed Record (avg. 165mph) on a motorcycle. Billy lead an active life as Staff Sergeant in the Royal Horse Artillery for 20 years before losing his sight whilst serving in Bosnia in 1997.

These days Billy is himself an inspiration to others, has been living life at breakneck speed and is always pushing himself to the limit. Since he lost his sight he has taken up horse riding again, learnt to ski and competed in the Great South Run and the London Marathon.

Billy continues to challenge public perception of the visually impaired with his daredevil antics.

This weekend (23rd September) Billy found himself riding a Ducati 695 (provided by Alan Jones from Ducati Motorcycles UK) at the around the home of the
British Motorcycle Racing, Donington Park.

The idea was thought up by the Fundraising department of Vista, a registered charity with a mission to service the needs of blind and partially sighted
people in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland through responsive services.

Billy jumped at the chance to get back on a Motorcycle and be the first blind person to ride solo around a British Motorcycle Racing track, therefore gain
another record.

Billy was supported by Tom Dunn (out-rider) and Steve Morris.

In an interview Billy joked "I'll be keeping my eyes closed". Billy also offered to give Leon Haslam a race around Donington, but said "I would have to
poke him in the eyes first"

Stressing that his biking stunts are not only to fulfil his passion for motorcycles but to also raise awareness for what disabled people can do!

Billy thanked Sonic for providing the radio equipment and Ducati Motorcycles UK for the two Ducati 695's that we provided for this event.
