This is more for splitting not merging, but I use total recorder because it allows me to cut a specific piece out of an MP3 file. I listen to folk shows and if I like the songs you just do shift L at the beginning and shift R at the end and then you go to the file menu and it gives you a way to give that file a specific name. Nothing is lost in translation because you are actually pulling a piece out of the original file. I have never really found the need to merge MP3s but for this particular application it works very well and of course it is a wonderfully easy way to trim a program, say from the BBC if you collect plays as I do. I think the professional version is about 35 dollars but it is well worth it.
