On the other hand, if you like at the broad strokes of genetic phenotypes
around the world, there is a definite correlation between body shape/mass and
climate. It doesn't always hold true, of course but notice I said broad strokes.
If you go to Russia, northern Europe, Siberia, places like that, the people
there are generally stocky, with lots of hair and a generally starch rich diet.
The guys are burly, the women are short, broad and or thick (my favorite type
of female, incidentally, grin.) And even further north, the Inuits and such are
shorter, close to the ground, in other words, to stay out of that arctic wind.
Then ifyou go into Africa, places in South America, Mexico, south Asia, you
find your skinnier people. They're long limbed and thin, because it's warm. So
there's definitely a scale there. It might not be body fat that does it, but
when you switch to the different climactic zones--equatorial, temperate,
arctic--you can see the differences.
I too love the cold. Today as I right this, it's about thirty below, and I'm
sitting here in a tee shirt, getting ready to make rigatoni bolognese. If I
could move up to Siberia where some places don't get above 70 in the summer,
I'd be happy. Of course, some spots out there hit 100 degrees in summer, just
like we do. Heh.

Dani: It's actually a misnomer that body fat makes the difference between
those who are always too warm versus those that are always complaining of
being too cold. Someone recently told me there was an extensive study done
on this very thing, and it actually had more to do with how close to the
skin the blood vessils and veins are than whatever the percentage of body
fat happens to be. I have always loved the cold, even when I was a skinny
kid of 150 pounds back in my high school days. No, highs in the 60s are not
nearly cold enough for me. Our summers are so absolutely miserable that it
takes me the entire so-called winter season just to feel somewhat normal
again. It's not just uncomfortable, it's opressive. It's so hot here for
so long at a time that being outside is unpleasant unless you're in the
water or at much higher elevation where it's not as hot. I actually
remember the year when my grandparents celebrated their 50th wedding
anavercery. We went to Idaho for Christmas that year, and the daytime highs
that day were around 30 below zero. I actually got so hot one night under
my electric blankets that I went outside for a few minutes in that cold with
no shirt on and just my PJs. So yes, I love the cold, when II can get it.

I'm smiling as I write this, because I'm freezing in HI, still bundled
up in sweats and socks. It was in the 60s last night, and little
Filipino girl was layered up. Our normal tradewind weather is not
happening; we have winds blowing from the north, and even though
they're only in the 7-10mph hour place, that's plenty cold. I read an
article this morning about how body fat is supposed to keep you warm.
I'm trying to slim down, but guess I'll be grateful for those extra
pounds while we deal with the cold fronts. They seem to be coming on
more often.
But it's nothing like up in Chicago and the Midwest, so I'll quit
complaining.
Thanks for the soup recipe. It gives me something to do with those
Little Smokies I have in the freezer.
And yes, Rob, I'd love to see the pasta recipe, too. Another thing
I'll never be tired of.

Thank you Sugar for the recipes, these will go on file as quite theopposite
to temps mentioned, we had a high of 116 F a few days back, broke allof
records for our city, but some towns exceeded that temp too.
We are making pickles and relish at the moment, it seems so odd to think
such coldness, wish we could send some sunshine your way and take some of
your cool weather here.
