Peter,
I believe I understand the issue you're having. Unfortunately, it's been
quite some time since I've used Outlook 97 but I believe you're on the
right track with the check box for whether to keep or delete mail on the
server. This is likely something you can find by calling Microsoft's
disability help desk at
800 936-5900
You could also Google something like
Outlook 97 where to find keep messages on server check box
You may have to go into the app called "mail" in your control panel as
some of these settings might not actually be in Outlook itself. However,
things could be very different with your version of Outlook which, as I
said, I've not used in some time.

Good morning everyone,
We're trying to troubleshoot a situation where not all of our devices recognize that mail is no longer on the server. We check our E-Mail daily. We're using a Windows 7 desktop, a laptop running Windows XP, and 3 iDevices an iPad Air2 and to iPhones. If we check E-Mail on the desktop we're assuming that there is no mail on the server. We always tell Windows and iOS not to leave messages on the server. All 4 devices download mail from the same account.
If we check mail using the XP laptop or any one of the iDevices all of these devices recognize that there is no remaining mail remaining on the server. However if we check E-Mail on the desktop the fact that there shouldn't be any E-Mail remaining on the server is not detected by the laptop or the iDevices. I was made painfully aware of this yesterday when I downloaded E-Mail to my iPhone. I ended up deleting over 2000 messages from that device. Again we're using the same account on all of these devices yet the laptop and the iDevices are downloading E-Mail messages we know for a fact were downloaded using our Windows 7 desktop.
Perhaps one place to begin solving this mystery is to check to see if the "Leave Messages on Server" checkbox is unchecked meaning that when mail is downloaded to the desktop it should not be available to be accessed by other devices. We're using Outlook 97. If someone could tell us where to find this setting this is a starting point to remedying this problem.
Should this fail to solve the problem we need to figure out where to go next with it. Time-Warner/Spectrum is our Internet provider. We're not sure if this is a Spectrum, Microsoft, or an Apple issue so would appreciate some suggestions on which way to go to prevent future E-Mail buildups on all of our devices. Some suggestions and possible remedies will be very much appreciated.
