Wise words and might I add this shouldn't just go to Muslims either. All the world are our sisters and brothers.

OPINION: How to stand up for Muslims now

by Yasmin Turk • December 8, 2015

Texas Muslim Capitol DayIn January attendees of Texas Muslim Capitol Day were harassed. It was the first time the annual event was disrupted since it began in 2003.
Especially for Muslims that have brown skin, wear a scarf, or have a name that is identifiably Muslim; these are hard times. The top contenders for the GOP presidential nomination have made statements that, at best, marginalize American Muslims and have incited some horrific incidents of Islamophobia across America recently. This is impacting Austin Muslims in very real ways, but sitting in that room of parents talking about how respond in ways that model our values to our children gave me much needed hope.

This week, I have also heard from non-Muslim friends; reaching out to offer a kind word in these times and asking how they can be supportive. Many of the same ideas the parent group came up with as their action items are the same that I would offer to anyone, regardless of religion, wanting to make the situation better during this challenging time.

Here are 3 things all Americans can do to right now:

1. Build bridges. Get to know people who are outside of your circle. Prejudice rarely survives experience, but over 75% of Americans do not have even one Muslim friend. Though many Muslims are feeling hesitant to reach out right now, it is important to do so. Either through formal events, like iACT’s interfaith events and the Muslims & Jewish Chinese Food Christmas lunch, or just connecting with a neighbor for coffee — extend an offer.

2. Don’t give in to fear. Fear turns into inaction and prevents us from moving forward as our best. Being kind to your neighbor and teaching your children to love others will help us to build the best world for all of us.

3. Speak up. When you hear bigoted, hateful, or misinformed speech regarding Muslims (or anyone!), say something! Have conversations with your children and those close to you about your values and how your values look when put into action.

The courage to stand out and stand up takes conviction. We have probably talked to our children about what to do if they are being bullied or see someone else be bullied, but as adults do we know what we would do as bystanders in a situation where someone is saying hateful things or being treated unfairly? One of my neighbors pointed out to me that if we do not prepare for those moments, then we sometimes respond with complicit silence.

Right now Muslims seem to be under the spotlight, but there have been other groups targeted in the past and there will likely be others in the future that face these challenges. Our responses today and tomorrow can always be to choose justice and kindness. Building bridges, not giving into fear and speaking up can bring us the future we need.

Hi Abdullah and All,

I haven't commented as I've been so very busy fighting for civil rights.
But, I don't wish to leave this thread untouched or talked about. I cannot
ever understand the true horror you witnessed in Bosnia, it was true "ethnic
cleansing". But, as you know I know a survivor of that nightmare, Marissa.

It is difficult for me to even imagine the thing, but being a being with
empathy I must so as if I were also at the holocaust. For all are lessons
for future generations in empathy, which some call altruism or universal
love.

So long story short, here I am an agnostic and I do believe in the
fundamental principle of all the great and small religions I know of which
is "love", peace and corroperation; the need to feel others pain and joys as
if they happen to ourself and the need to cooperate if for nothing else the
common good and the common survival.

My eyes are still misty with tears for the day long ago when I held on a
baseball field the younger Marissa as she flinched with emotional pain at
the thought of fireworks at a baseball game. The trauma was that deep and
one need not be a psychiatrist to figure out the impact of post traumatic
stress syndrome.

In fact I did nothing but consolation and just a little bit of empathy, once
again.
Now this is up close and personal for I had covered by AP wire the Bosnian
thing as it was called several yrs before before wire taker while an intern
at a Manchester, N.H. radio station, and yet here on this day in 2001, not
long before 911 , I held a trembling young woman in my arms over a prospect
of a fireworks display at a minor league baseball game. All because she
suffered the horrors of the "ethnich cleansing' up close and personal and
all because she happened to be born of parents with mixed, heritage; her
fater was Muslim and her mother Christian. And all were in the middle of a
stupid centuries old storm of ideologoy; and as you point out, Abdullah
something more important; the need to divide and conquer over any angle one
had.
It is all about control over people and populatins these thingsare! All
about control. Really controllers don't give a shit if we love Allah,
Jehovah or Jesus. They just wish to control us.

Wow!

And this was a talented young lady who aided me in Braille instruction
though she suffered the loss of her cousin anddeprevation at the most
hideous insult against human rights in Europe after world war II.

Oh and I could write more but what the us?
I'm writing today to say I hear what you are saying Abdullah! I'm one
American who really heir's you sir. I do.

I too am frighted by the America of the far right cranks and the sycophants.
For they remind me too of the pre-Nazi ramblings of Hitler and other
proto-Fascist.

In fact when the likes of Dick Cheny say, "Trump is a proto-fascist" it just
brought shivers to my spine.

I, for the record, detest all sorts of mass violence and all sorts of
repression and no matter what the source I resist these authoritarian tasks
upon us no matter whom we are; wheter muslim, Christian, Jew; or whatever
affiliation or lack thereof.

Hi Miriam
that why what about I am righting, not about him like him, like trump,

I am righting about people who follow him, but problem are is to many people follow him,
like you say
fact that there are so many people supporting
him

about that people I am righting about people who supporting him,
that why what making me to warring.

Trump like him self is not problem, more problem are people who support him and his idea's, who things like him,

as we can see today is to many people like that,

from experience I can say one terrorism support other terrorism and they are support each other of Corse in negative way:

that why I would like to hear Christian to stand up and say very loud we are not for Trump adia and we can't things like that.
I thought that USA is normal country, I thought that language of hate never will bee on TV or some media,

but now I see that I am rung
now I see all what happen round world that not people of USA but government of USA support.

Aloud men to continue campaign for president with fool language of hate than I don't know what could bee next.
Nothing als then welcome in to wonder land.

I understand what you're saying and many people are horrified by what Trump
is saying. And yes, of course there are people who think the way he does.
America has a history of intolerance. But we have no mechamism for
preventing someone with obnoxious views from running for the nomination of a
political party for president. I don't think he will become the nominee. I
am much more disturbed by the fact that there are so many people supporting
him. I think that his extremism is cementing Hillary Clinton's claim to the
Presidency and that is very disturbing to me because of her foreign policy
views, and the fact that she is supported by elites and will do their
bidding as President.

Miriam.

who one time went through the horrible things that one experienced fraud in
the name of eyelids, nationalism, persecution on the basis religion,

regardless you are below or not had with fayfol just because his name was
Abdullah, Muhammad, or do not know one that more resembles the name of a
hundred Islamic name:

that one knows what serves the silence and medians campaign carried

not of ordinary citizens that campaign conducted by politicians,
journalists, then from the persons having our strong influence on politics,
economy, military, police, all in all the whole structure of life of a
country, and certainly this is a state that defines itself as military and
economic power,

nevertheless still define themselves as secular state, a state that is
aligned to one side and it in this case solely on the Christian community
and the Muslim population.

like this campaign I have experienced in the early 1990s in the former
Yugoslavia when ramped up campaign what result was genocide in my hometown
1Srebrenici 1995 years where mankind could not imagine methods of genocide,
torture, murder rape, and moreover when the women born waiting to exit from
child uterus and then men with a knife killing and stepping on the same born
child legs.

I Do not wont wait for that moment again, which I have already welcomed and
lost in this war more than half a nearby family, including his father and
brother who was born 1977 years, was killed in the massacre in 1995 and
prothey are was find in a mass grave just somewhere with my father in 2007
The apparent with traces of torture and violence in the mass grave clearly
secondary grave some 30 miles from Srebrenica.

That's what it means to silence church community

this call lynching of Muslims in the United States, and even more so person
to whom we are witness Trump and his fascist ideas against Muslims, ada no
sanctions and some kind of condemnation against him.

As a conscious man as a well-educated man who knows his appearance all these
atrocities and what it takes and that's why I talk about this, and also man
who has passed through all of this:

and what now? whether we should re all going through this what I have
experience, and in fact, if I survive, this time what I doubt that I could
not bear it all, a way some one who calls lynching of Muslims I don't
believe that anyone would survive,

because propaganda is so strong a conviction that any even the most moderate
Christian will tempted to crime or crime to an unreasonable that only
different religion's confessions or just because his or her name associated
with a Muslim name.

This is no longer a mere game or propaganda that is what individual is
carried out, this might as well say that the State carried out, not Muslim
religion's organizations that publicly don't show in the newspaper or on TV
channels to deny or to look for punishment of anyone who spread religious
hatred and.

Big statement someone who is running for president can not be fat or
material for campaign

these statements drought and had to be sanctioned, because it is not an
ordinary man there someone who says something just to make themselves known,

this is the man who aspires to the president, this is the man who tomorrow
if he won the election, who should protect me and all the other
non-Christians and Christians and all other citizens USA.

Unfortunately this is not just Fox news here included most if not all TV and
all the other news agencies that wider religion hatred towards Muslims,

Is it normal that in a secular state,
a state that considers itself most tolerant country in the world,

where I could not even imagine that it never dream could happen to do banal
things just like what is happening on the Balkans, and that is

This morning, for example, we read in the newspapers that the Pensloveniji
in one mosque they found several pig heads, is this perhaps an ordinary
campaign or false rhetoric of Fox News ?:

as I said this is all me cut to the former Yugoslavia and the beginning of
the hunting of Muslims

frankly I am worried and afraid is that, as I said

Terrorism don't attack only non Muslims, terrorism attack Muslim to

Muslims killed if not more than the non-Muslims of the same terrorism.

Last statement Trump and his non-punishment is justified my doubt and my
concern and a legitimate fear,

this man, or men like him,
who would not be excluded immediately from the election campaign for
president,

If this don't happen then everything is clear that the state, non-Muslim
population agrees with his speech and his Strategy to Muslim population in
the USA,

and that all these groups are adopting the strategy and his plan,

and are ready to implement it in part to the end.

Abdulah,

I think you should not watch Fox News. It is the voice of a very right wing
secgtor of America, and its views are not typical of all Americans. Also,
remember that there are many different kinds of Christians. Even within one
branch of Christianity like the Catholic Church, there are very progressive
people as well as very conservative people. When you listen to cable TV,
you're not getting the whole picture. They broadcast what the corporations
who fund them want, and what they think will draw listeners. It's been a
really long time since we've heard any real news on TV, perhaps 40 or 50
years. But there certainly are people who are now frightened of Muslim
people because of what they hear on cable TV and because of their own
ignorance. Mostly, these are older white people and remember, they are no
longer the majority of the population.

Miriam

greeting old friends
I am again with my fan comments, I can not help but I have to give a comment

trying to get my comments to be realistic, objective and fair.
watching CNN and FOX News, who knows that all channels are not,

I must say I came to the conclusion, that these days one and only skilled
and most important is to protect the United States under the protection
sitizentce

USA sitizentce applies to all but not Muslims.

Only mentioned American sitizentce and in doing so indicate Muslims as
terrorists, a threat to humanity as somehow evil by worldwide population.

So on behalf of all I want to ask a few questions:

number gave USA sitizentce only Christians or the thoughts the Muslims is
not sitizentce, from what we see and hear on the news are not Muslims USA
sitizentce because they are the cause of all the problems that are occurring
in world in USA.

This conclusion is hereby issue because presidential candidates only talk
about Muslims as terrorists, making a concentration camp for them, marked
and who knows what all is and that is why they are or punishment:

punished for spreading hatred on religions basis, on the deliberate excesses
nobody reacts.

Number 2 Do not are just victims of these Muslim terrorist crimes, and I
know how many terrorists or terrorists do not fall victim by eyelids or skin
colors but when it does the mass murder killing Muslims as well as
non-Muslims.

Number 3 who will protect Muslims from terrorists, who will protect Muslims
from Trump and others presednicki who will candidates may be elected for
president, and now spreading the poison of hatred most obvious public in a
public place and all the media:

so I ask myself and all of you who will Muslims protect?

This population is exposed double attack, with one side of a non-Muslim,
other sides of the so-called Muslims who fight and real deeds in the name of
Islam, who in yellow case to protect the Muslims who are not for war and
terrorist murders and other felonious bed things?

I must say here that religion's community on a public call lynching of
Muslims, put into some sort of concentration camps, marking and even
probable murder mystery:

The Christian community are silence and do not respond to such serious
things,

what could be said that in this case the call to the Christian Islamic war,

because silence is a sign of approval dissemination of hate and incitement
to concentration camps and marking some kind of strips:

If the Christian community are silence and do not react, the don't look for
sanctioning any hate speech then what else could be, but an open invitation
to war, Christianity and Islam.

I'm very sorry to say this but with this extension and ignoring the hate
speech of the ruling institutions and Christian communities You can not
interpreted otherwise.

I must say here that terrorists don't choose crime scene,

acts of terrorism carried out in Kuwait, Lebanon, Syria, Tunisia, Yemen,
Bosnia and Herzegovina as well as in USA:

means don't choose right Muslim or not Muslim goal is to kill as many world
and intimidate the population and then to govern the situation.

I am sorry to have to count the victims and to cite this order and to say
that more and which less die in this section but not criminal

situation and the situation in which we are find, fours me to put it this
way.

Silence a Christian organization, silence of official American institutions
I am afraid to push in to extremism most tolerant Muslims, and that's the
point extremist:

When I say that this will push the most tolerant Muslims in extremism it
explains the reasons,

If both attacking Muslims or Christians and Muslims extreme then what to do,
and what is the choice?

Once before the concentration camps and labeled for various bands,

while others call them traitors, infidels and those on whom Allah has put a
curse for not being with them and not to enjoy these extreme groups, then
you can imagine in what situation and condition of the American Muslims are
today.
