It's very confusing. Yes, the basic motivation was a wish for change, a need
to break out of a corrupt system. But when they analyzed who the voters
were, the majority were white men, and older ones at that. The people who
have been most hurt by the system for years, are people of color, and they
have reason to want to smash the system. But they heard what Trump was
saying and they knew that he wasn't the answer. So we have to assume that
the majority of people who voted for him, white people, heard what he was
saying and it was OK with them. The person who shops for me doesn't like
Trump, but she did think that what he said about immigrants had some merit.
And as Michael Moore pointed out, once you're in that voting booth with
nobody watching, you can express how you really feel. One can blame
Capitalism for using race to divide people except that if one looks back
over human history, race, tribe, and religion, have always divided people.
Someone I once knew, said that it has to do with cavemen. You defend the
people who live in your cave against competitors for food. And then there's
a woman I heard interviewed on Weekend Edition on NPR yesterday. She's a
white woman, I think a journalist or member of some organization or other.
She sounded literate and intelligent, just like one of Keillor'S favored
elites. She eloquently defended her support of Trump and she denied any
racism or anti immigrant feelings on her part. She was in an alternative
reality. A lot of white women voted for Trump, and they weren't all
dispossessed workers, apparently. Those women must have heard the way Trump
talked about women throughout his campaign. His misogeny didn't deter them.
I also heard an unapologetic Hispanic female Trump supporter on that
program. She was quite articulate and sounded rational. I kept wondering if
she was a white Cuban from Florida.

Reflecting on Trump's election, Garrison Keillor wrote in part: "The
uneducated white males who elected him..."
You are absolutely wrong, Garrison. And the worst of it is, such wrong talk
can do absolutely no good. None at all.
Lumping the Trump voters as ignorant white males, may make a few folk feel
good, or superior, but that is what got us into this mess in the first
place.
What just happened is that People, just like the rest of us, did what we all
did back in 2008. We went for the "outsider", a Black man! A Prince of
Peace! The man who promised us so much...and went on to deliver so little.
Forget the reasons. It never happened. But given the choices, Hillary or
Donald, people rejected the "Establishment Candidate", and went for the
maverick who, like Obama before him, promised relief for the Working Class.
But of course, change will not come in the form of relief for the working
class. And don't get some dreamy idea that Hillary would have made life
better, either. Both candidates were bankrolled by the Ruling Class. Even
though Trump made faces like he was footing his own run for the roses, it
was all talk. Trump, like Clinton, is beholden to his "Handlers", the super
rich. These are the ones who will profit from this "rebellion", this so
called rejection of the Establishment.
The big joke is on the working class. The very rejection, the hope that
this man Trump would make life more tolerable, will turn on them.
Trump will not serve two Masters. His loyalty is wrapped up in Capitalism.
Capitalism has done him right, as a realtor and entrepreneur. Trump is not
going to forsake his fellow billionaires in favor of the very working class
he has abused and used to climb his way up the Golden Ladder.
In time, the American Public that put this man in office, will come to
understand that they have been trick or treated. And the Empire will also
get the same message. The Empire created the atmosphere that gave Donald
Trump the support he needed to win, but it also has created so many lies and
untruths that this same Public will finally turn on the Empire, itself. The
day on which that begins will be written down as the Second Great American
Revolution.

Here's Garrison Keillor. Obviously, he's angry. But clearly, his
picture of who will be most hurt is skewed, as is his picture of
America. He's focused on his former teachers, in their 90's, former
fighters in our wars which, apparently, he considers to have been
glorious. He's managed to forget who the majority of the American
population is in 2016 and who Trump's followers are already
victimizing. Really, I'd like to write an angry letter to Keillor!

Keillor writes: "For the Trump voters, the disasters he will bring on
this country will fall more heavily on them than anyone else. The
uneducated white males who elected him are the vulnerable ones, and
they will not like what happens next."
