I'm reading Becoming, by Michelle Obama, and perhaps I'll write a review of
it for the DB Review list. I haven't decided. But what I probably won't
include in my review, if I do write it, is how painful it is for me to read
about Obama's election and what it was like for Michelle to become First
Lady. As she describes what she experienced, I keep thinking with horror,
about who next went through the process of occupying the White House and who
it is who now has all of the protections and symbols of the US Presidency at
his command. I'm thinking about who the First Lady is. Yes, I have my
disappointments, anger, and frustration with Obama as President. But I also
remember how joyful I was that we had actually elected a Black President,
that the White House was inhabited by people of African descent. And the
Obama's are people that one can be proud of; intelligent, articulate, highly
educated... Reading this part of the book has just brought all of my
distress about this President, to the fore again. And I really don't think
including those feelings in my potential book review, would be a good idea.
