Hi Carl,
No doubt about it. WE humans are a violent race. Sometimes I wonder if humans
from Europe are more violent than those originating in other parts of the
world. Yes, human history is riddled with violence committed by all races and
creeds. But, it seems as though the western Europeans raised that violence to a
new level as they invented more complex weapons of war.
One of my Favorite TV shows was Startrek. I often refer to what I call the
Startrek ethos. That is, a situation where whole planets established world
governance and eliminated poverty. The United Federation of planets requires
that any planet desiring membership must first solve it's problems of racism,
violence, poverty, etc. While the Federation offered limited help and guidance
to planets where war among its people was still occurring, each planet had to
make peace with itself before it could join the Federation. But, alas, even in
the Startrek ethos, war and conflict did exist. In the early shows with Captain
Kirk, the Federation was in conflict with the Klingons. By the time the Next
Generation flavor of Startrek was created in the 1980's, the Klingons had
joined the Federation.
Considering for a moment the continuum from war to peace, I'd say we humans are
regressing in the direction of war.
