I'm not sure what you were suggesting about my world not being turned
upside down, and for some reason I can't bring that note of yours up
again. Marsha's note and your reply appear, but google is toying with
me again, so when I went back to read what you'd written, it's buried
somewhere. Boy, I sure miss my old email.
Anyway, I lived in two worlds as a boy. My dad's, in whom I had total
confidence in his being the smartest man on Earth, and my teachers in
my nice all White, upwardly mobile neighborhood school. At the grade
school, I was taught that we were the greatest and most free nation on
Earth. Our government was elected by all the people, and served us
all equally. If people were poor, it was their fault, not the great
American government's.
I learned all about our great victories over Evil Despots, reading
about each great general who led us to victory. I learned of the
great industrialists who made this nation powerful and great. And I
took it all in, just as I took in Adam and Eve and how God created the
Earth and all the life on it.
At home, my dad read to me from the Daily Worker and the People's
World, and Northern Neighbors. Dad, and to some degree Mother, talked
to my sisters and me about how this country was led by ruthless
warriors who believed it was their destiny to cross the Pacific Ocean
and conquer all of Asia.
It was my Dad who taught me to think about, and to question,
everything I read or was told. Even so it took me years of confusion
before I came to understand just how thoroughly we Americans were
being propagandized. Yes, as a boy I did believe that the Evil Japs
bombed our ships for no other reason than to conquer the world. And I
believed the Nazis also wanted to enslave all of us in the "Free
World".
I had been so conditioned in school and in church, that I simply could
not see that America was as cruel an Empire as the British Empire had
been, or the French, or the Spanish. All were spinoffs of the Great
Roman Empire. I closed my eyes and ears to the way we destroyed
nations of people living in this land that God had "given" us. I
ignored our history of slavery, our abuse of anyone of a different
color or religion. The hatred that has lain just below the surface,
ready to lash out at whomever our Masters tell us to lash out at.
The day came when I finally began to think independently. Right or
wrong, at least what I think is based on my own ability to make sense
out of the world around me. So no, my world is not turned upside
down. Any nation that can send thousands of young people to their
death in an effort to satisfy the greed of huge corporations, and the
desires of power hungry "Leaders", and was built on the murder of
thousands of native men, women and children, and built its commerce on
the backs of slaves and very cheap non white labor, there can be no
doubt that such a nation could conceive of "sacrificing" a few
thousands of its own people in order to advance its goal of world
dominance.
And of course after I process what information I can, and come to a
conclusion, it very well could be a wrong one, like my belief that
Hillary Clinton was going to win by a landslide. Just because I do my
best to independently weigh the available information, and sort out
fact from fancy, does not mean that I have some great insight. But
the basic truth, to my way of thinking, is that we humans are very
flawed, and probably cannot overcome our aggressive methods of solving
our problems.

recent book I've read describing how there was pressure on the US to go to
war to save England because the Germans seemed to be taking over all of
Europe. The American people were not at all interested in war. FDR was
doing
all kinds of things to help England, but not openly, and much of it wasn't
exactly legal. So he was looking for something that would cause the
American people to embrace war.
