I am the proud owner of both, Larry! I got the 3800 two years ago because the
2600 was not playing nice with Windows in BootCamp on an iMac, but the 3800
didn’t have that problem. When I saw the 3900 was now Mac compatible and ABBYY
finally made a full FineReader Pro for Mac (albeit not as full featured), I
wanted to get it and I am slowly scanning my first paperback with it. One of
the great things for me is you can totally lift off the lid which lets me work
in a tighter place, under a shelf. Otherwise it is very similar to the 3800.
Wish they made an affordable bookedge legal size scanner; dreaming, I know. LOL
