Or you could go into control pannel, power settings, and set the screen to turn off after a minute of activity. There are two settings, one for ac adapter and the other for battery. I set everything the same because JAWS doesn't tell you which settings column you're in. One word of caution, set the standby setting to never because once the hard drive stops, so does the screenreader. You can reduce the time it powers off for inactivity in hard drive which will hybernate, but don't do standby. HTH.

If your laptop only lets you turn off the screen if there is an external
screen attached, there is a way to get around that. I don't know what it is
called, but you can buy this plug thing to attach to the external monitor
port. It's like the size of an adapter or converter and all you have to do
is attach it before you turn the machine on.

Hey Sarah,
Yes drats mine autodetects, I was disappointed when I found that out.
Sometimes It will work if its switched to that option when hooked to an
external monitor and then unhooked. However usually I have to hybernate it
to get it where I'm going and then it almost always attempts to detect
that
external monitor again when I bring it up.
