I want to qualify my comment that a book can be validated in one or two days.

1. the step 1 copy must be in extremely good condition. This occurs when the submitter has produced a great scan with proper ocr and software settings. The submitter has run rank spelling or read through the book and omited as many errors as possible

2. the book is short such as 200 pages.

3. The validator has access to tools for checking a book. For me, I could not do a fast turn around on a book unless I had kurzweil's rank spelling and other features. I also use my braille display to check for errors I would not get with a spoken k1000 reading. I need both these tools personally to get things done quickly.

3. 3. experience. If you think your first book is taking a long time to validator, new volunteers, you are probably correct. Validating thoroughly and well takes practice. Be patient with yourself. Start with a scan from someone known to produce good submits. Take one book at a time so you feel capable rather than overwhelmed. Get the best tools possible. Be careful of jiffy validating. If the book has a lot of errors, it is a poor place for a new validator to begin.

Jamie if I snapped a bit in my last message, I apologize. I would rather go about things with fewer rules and do get grumpy about rules a bit. (grin)
