Do you have Word set up as a launchable from within Open Book? I bet that you do. If so, try opening your scanned book, going to the Advanced menu, then selecting Word and pressing enter. The entire book should then be transferred into MS Word. Do you still see those extraneous characters? If so, I don't know what to tell you. But, if that works okay, then save the book immediately, and be sure to explicitly specify a path when you do or you'll be hunting for it until next Thursday. <grin> One of my pet peeves about the launchable implementation in Open Book is that the code isn't smart enough to assume that you want to transfer or save anything directly to your my documents folder.
Good luck with this. If I can be of further assistance, holler.
Tom

Hi folks,
I just downloaded a book from Bookshare with plans to validate. It was an Arkenstone file, which, in fact, I originally scanned with Openbook. I unzipped the folder with no trouble, opened the .ark file in Openbook, and then used save as to save the file as a .rtf file. When I opened the .rtf file to spellcheck and otherwise proofread, multiple previously unseen characters appeared. For example, all the quotation marks had become rquote, those letters exactly as you see them. I also saw many instances of \par \par. I went back and looked at the .ark file in Openbook, and none of those things seem to be present. Still being fairly new to this art, I wonder if there's some simple explanation for this which I have not yet learned. The .rtf file by the way, opens in MS Word ... should that make a difference?
Anyhow, I am rather perplexed and thought if anyone would know, someone here could supply the answer.
