Hi Lissi, I'm using Word 2007—a good reason, I guess, not to upgrade! I had heard of docs appearing in protected mode, but didn't realize that particular bug-a-boo was introduced in 2010. It sounds like perhaps Larry has a promising solution or work-around to this problem. Good luck! Both of us have benefitted. Thank you for your suggestion. No instructions are too elementary for me! I appreciate the details. Could it be you haven’t had my problem because you open downloaded books or documents in k1000 or something other than Word 2010 or above? The protected view thing started when I was forced to buy a new computer which had Windows 7 and word 2010. If the protected view which prevents you from doing anything in a document until you get rid of it is a gremlin, then the ribbons that come with word 2010 are trolls! I’m accumulating keystrokes to regain my former independence with Word. Many of the old keystrokes still work, but not all. It’s a process and being on this list helps. Press the page up key and then move down one line at a time until you get to the the line with box. I don't know how comfortable you are with JAWS, so please forgive me if this is remedial stuff. Anyway, hold down the control key while using the right or left arrow keys until you have the JAWS cursor/mouse pointer where you need it and do a left click. Voila! Using JAWS how do you get the cursor up there and to the box so you can make that bar vanish. I have JAWS but have been using my eyes to do this but it is such a slow, painful thing. I would be so relieved for JAWS to spare me this. I use JAWS for everything possible, for all of my emailing, proofreading, everything, but sometimes don’t know how to get the cursor to go places. Gratefully and Always with love, Lissi
