Debby, That's interesting. I proofread To Speak the Truth, and the twenty-seven step method removed a number of paragraph marks. I had to remove many manually because they occurred in mid-sentence before capitalized words like Cuba, Castro, United States, etc. For some reason, the method Denise mentioned did not work on that particular book.

I foun the speeches quite interesting.

Just a word of advice, you might turn on "show all" and check some of the line endings just to double check because I have seen some scanned books that have a paragraph mark, a space and then a lower case letter, why I don't know.

Thank you. If the Malcolm X book does not have the line break problem I do not understand why. I scanned it with the same settings I used for the other unacceptable books. As for the others, the last time I checked, last night, no one had taken them yet.

Hi Roger and everyone!

Has someone taken care of your books, Roger? I just checked out the one of the speeches of Malcolm X and went through the procedure to delete extra paragraph marks and Word made 0 replacements through the whole alphabet, so it looks like the problem has been solved for this book.

Since I have it, I think I might as well go on and proofread it so every word is read so poor old Mr. X can stop languishing on the checkout list, (smile).

Speaking of new volunteers not quite knowing what they don't know, that was the problem that my scans with line breaks that turned each line into a paragraph was causing. A new volunteer would get hold of one of my submissions and think they were doing a fine job and upload it and it would get bounced back because of the line breaks. Not only did the new volunteer not know that the problem existed, but they would not quite know what to do with it when it was bounced back. That means that I think it is time to remind those of you who have the equipment and expertise to take care of those line breaks that I still have three submissions on the checkout list that need to be taken care of before a new volunteer gets them. Right now I am working on W. E. B. du Bois Speaks and that is the first one since I finally figured out how to stop those line breaks. It is also the one that I got halfway through when my OCR zapped it and I had to start over. So it has taken me quite a bit of time. The three still on the checkout list that need the line breaks removed are 1. February 1965: The Final Speeches by Malcolm X, 2. E Pluribus Unicorn by Theodore Sturgeon, and 3. U.S. Hands Off the Mideast by Fidel Castro. These were all scanned two pages at a time and I preproofed each two pages before going on to the next two, so, except for the line breaks they should be pretty easy proofs. There is another one, Lost Traveler, that was the cause of the phone calls from Bookshare that prompted my latest efforts to solve the line break problem. It has been checked out by the Bookshare employee who called me and it has been held for quite some time now and I don't know what is happening with it, but if one of you with the expertise would like to do it, it has been not only scanned two pages at a time and preproofed while that was being done, but it has also been proofed by a new volunteer who was unable to handle the line breaks. If one of you will take it I suppose I could email that Bookshare employee and ask that it be released with a hold for you.

Jamie's comment about volunteers not knowing what they don't know and possibly having test proofs, sparked some ideas. I think new volunteers should tell Bookshare what software they are using to scan or proof, and be matched with experienced volunteers, using similar software, who have agreed to be mentors. The new volunteer should be sent files pertaining to their specific software, and do test runs before actually beginning to scan or proof materials. They can contact their mentor at any time if they run into issues. These are just my ideas, and my desire is to get the highest quality books into the collection.
