Hi Lissi,
Don't worry about asking basic questions--everyone starts out as a beginner.
First of all, about the initials that represent file formats. They aren't
random--they usually stand for what the format is. For example, rtf stands for
rich text format. Others refer to the file type by using a few letters from the
name of that type--for example, txt for text, doc for document (this is
MSWord's pet format), brf for braille file, etc. Finally, kes and arc are
proprietary formats used by Kurzweil and Openbook, respectively. These two
can't be opened by other software or read on a note taker.

There are two kinds of uploading that are done in relation to Bookshare.
Uploading in general means sending a file from your computer to another
computer, such as the Bookshare servers. The first kind of uploading that's
done is submitting books. You can do that by hitting the link labeled "Submit a
Book." The second kind of uploading is when you've validated a book and want
to send it back to the system so it can become part of the collection. This is
accessed by the link labeled "Step 2 upload." Is this the one you were looking
at that was confusing?
Kellie
