But, what is available on web braille can actually be read. I requested several braille books and got some years later, literally, and had, by that time, forgotten that I'd had put in the request.

Quite ture, but NOT all of NLS's materials are available on Web Braille.

That is what I meant, smile.

Shelley, Web Braille is equally portable and one of the reasons I like it so
much is that I never have to deal with hard copy braille. Jill

These are very good reasons.

My one I would like to add, is that the Bookshare format is portable, no
matter how you look at it, just cringing and thinking of the boxes of
braille books that I need to mail out of Revere next week.

Hi all,

Below are my top ten reasons for why I think it's okay for us to put books
already available on NLS on Bookshjare.

These are just my opinions and not official Benetech guidelines.

1. Bookshare's format is longer-lasting and we don't have to worry about
books getting lost during equipment updates like is happening with some of
the current NLS tapes that won't be put into digital format.
2. NLS Braille books don't have as sophisticated of navigation features as
Daisy books do.
3. If a book is only available on NLS as a talking book, then a deaf blind person can't use it. They can use Bookshare because we offer all books in
BRF.
4. Each Braille Bookshare book is not broken up into several files like
Web
Braille books.
5. If an NLS book is only available in talking book format, then one won't
have page numbers. Some people need page numbers for school or another
reason.
6. There are people who may want electronic copies of books, but who don't
have software to convert Web Braille's BRF files. As far as I know, web
Braille books are only offered in one format.
7. International users can't subscribe to NLS, and yet more and more of
the
Bookshare collection is becoming available to international users.
8. The Victor Stream can't play BRF files yet.
9. Sometimes it's nice to have one location from which one can download
all
their books.
10. As far as I know, most learning disabled individuals don't qualify for
NLS, but they do qualify for Bookshare.

Perhaps someone who doesn't use NLS got a copy of it, and decided to scan
it. It's their time. I suppose they can scan what they want to.

In addition, neither version of the available book from NLS contains page
numbering like Bookshare has the capacity of doing.

Not everyone with a print disability qualifies for NLS. There are many
learning disabilities that do not qualify under NLS.
