Allison is absolutely correct. There is no reason to refrain from submitting a book scanned by a volunteer only because the same title appears already on NLS, or on any other accessible collection. Bookshare, NLS, RFB&D are essentially libraries. Libraries have both unique and duplicate titles. . . and readers are all the richer for it! Jim spoke to this effect when -- in early Bookshare days -- I was concerned about scanning for Bookshare titles that were already on the NLS eText collection, and would therefore have constituted a duplicate of sorts. Maybe it was only those who were most certain they were right who were guaranteed to be wrong. And that maybe, just maybe, those who questioned the most were in the end those who came closest to being wise." WAS Re: atonement Hi all, Below are my top ten reasons for why I think it's okay for us to put books already available on NLS on Bookshjare. These are just my opinions and not official Benetech guidelines. 1. Bookshare's format is longer-lasting and we don't have to worry about books getting lost during equipment updates like is happening with some of the current NLS tapes that won't be put into digital format. 2. NLS Braille books don't have as sophisticated of navigation features as Daisy books do. 3. If a book is only available on NLS as a talking book, then a deaf blind person can't use it. They can use Bookshare because we offer all books in BRF. 4. Each Braille Bookshare book is not broken up into several files like Web Braille books. 5. If an NLS book is only available in talking book format, then one won't have page numbers. Some people need page numbers for school or another reason. 6. There are people who may want electronic copies of books, but who don't have software to convert Web Braille's BRF files. As far as I know, web Braille books are only offered in one format. 7. International users can't subscribe to NLS, and yet more and more of the Bookshare collection is becoming available to international users. 8. The Victor Stream can't play BRF files yet. 9. Sometimes it's nice to have one location from which one can download all their books. 10. As far as I know, most learning disabled individuals don't qualify for NLS, but they do qualify for Bookshare.
