I don't suppose the book was actually written by a woman who was afraid
it wouldn't be published if she didn't pretend to be a man?  That
happened often enough in the past.

I have read plenty of books written by men that seemed to express the
feelings of women very well, so I don't think it is a given fact that
all truly great portrayals of character have to be written by a person
of the same gendar.
