Dear Ernie, and Everyone,

Thanks, Ernie. My reading card is overfull with the resources I have, but RFB and D was a fabulous source when I was a student and for 27 years when I was a teacher scouting out accessible textbooks for my students.

While my EarthLink wires were crossed and I couldn't answer e mail, someone kindly pointed out that RFB and D had recorded, "The Annotated Hobbit," which is one of the highest titles on my wish list.

Pro reading and brailling are nice when we can get them, but if it's a choice of amateur work or no book at all, I'm always grateful for volunteer produced material.

One of the many things I love about Bookshare is the chance to be one of those volunteers. The feeling of uploading a clean validation which will be accurate and well formatted for the reader is intoxicating.

Always with love,

Lissi

Lissy,

Rfb&d does not do Braille. They are, however, a great source for the more studious reader. Nls tends to stick with lighter material.

A subscription to Rfb&d is an excellent resource if you care to delve more deeply into most subjects.

There reading is done by volunteers, and therefore can be a bit sloppy at times, but this doesn't detract from their value.

Medal not in the affairs of wizards, for they are subtle and quick to anger,
Ernie

Dear Mike and Everyone,

Though NLS, NBP, The Wisconsin Volunteer Braillists and Bookshare keep me too busy to justify subscribing to RFB and D, I know the later is an excellent organization with a sizable library.

For the most part, I look for books in braille. The 4 groups I'm active with provide books in braille format. I thought RFB and D provided audio but not braille books. Is that true? It's still a fabulous resource, but unless it added the braille choice, it wouldn't fill my needs as wonderfully as Bookshare can.

Thanks for the information,

Always with love,

Lissi

It's too bad that RFB&D hasn't gone into something like BookShare.
They have the expertise, the funding channels in place, and the ability to
recruit volunteers to help with the day-to-day operation and grunt work.
Time will tell, of course, where both technology and Bookshare will end
up.
I am guessing, however, that the current situation of folks hand scanning
books is an interim step ultimately replaced by high speeding scanning or
electronic digital tapes adding books to the collection.
I understand, Sue, where you are coming from and surfacewise, your
analysis makes sense.
However, I suspect that the ultimate culprits are both a lack of funding
compounded bby slow growth in the user base which discourages contributors
even if they are found.
The volunteer community can be dedicated and hard working; but whithout
Palo Alto playing its part and supplying direction and management, it is
for naught.
Personally, while I hope that Bookshare can clean up its operation and
make it more polished, I am hoping that some other organization, such as
RFB&D, will ultimately step forward and offer a similar service that can
overcome the short falls that a pioneer operation that Bookshare has
shown.
This is a learning experience for all parties involved as this has never
been done before.
