Lissi,
You are correct. RFB&D books are on CD with no braille options.
Dear Mike and Everyone,
Though NLS, NBP, The Wisconsin Volunteer Braillists and Bookshare keep me too busy to justify subscribing to RFB and D, I know the later is an excellent organization with a sizable library.
For the most part, I look for books in braille. The 4 groups I'm active with provide books in braille format. I thought RFB and D provided audio but not braille books. Is that true? It's still a fabulous resource, but unless it added the braille choice, it wouldn't fill my needs as wonderfully as Bookshare can.
Thanks for the information,
Always with love,
Lissi

It's too bad that RFB&D hasn't gone into something like BookShare.
They have the expertise, the funding channels in place, and the ability to
recruit volunteers to help with the day-to-day operation and grunt work.
Time will tell, of course, where both technology and Bookshare will end
up.
I am guessing, however, that the current situation of folks hand scanning
books is an interim step ultimately replaced by high speeding scanning or
electronic digital tapes adding books to the collection.
I understand, Sue, where you are coming from and surfacewise, your
analysis makes sense.
However, I suspect that the ultimate culprits are both a lack of funding
compounded bby slow growth in the user base which discourages contributors
even if they are found.
The volunteer community can be dedicated and hard working; but whithout
Palo Alto playing its part and supplying direction and management, it is
for naught.
Personally, while I hope that Bookshare can clean up its operation and
make it more polished, I am hoping that some other organization, such as
RFB&D, will ultimately step forward and offer a similar service that can
overcome the short falls that a pioneer operation that Bookshare has
shown.
This is a learning experience for all parties involved as this has never
been done before.
