I was trained with the tap method. It probably has some official name, but I don't know what it is. Tap to the left as your right foot goes forward, tap to your right as your left foot goes forward. Anyway, somewhere along the way I became a constant contact kind of girl. I had a straight NFB cane for years and years, and I would wear out tips very fast. Now I use a folding cane with a rolling tip after taking someone's advice, and my tips last longer, and the cane works well with my rapid gait. So I have a folding cane for every day and a shiny pretty straight cane for formal events. A friend of mine has some vision, and uses one of those ID canes. She simply carries it in one hand, straight up and down, the tip never touching the ground. It's very short, like to her breastbone, I think, but I'd have to ask. Or maybe it's just that she's short, too. <Smile> Beyond Sight, here in Littleton, Colorado, sells canes and cane tips, and lots of other things, too. I sometimes think they're slightly expensive, but they're knowledgeable and helpful. I just bought a talking scale from them and am quite pleased with it. Their number is 303-795-6455. Just rambling, and hope you don't mind. I've checked out your ideas and am on the verge of buying a watch and will send a post when I've made my choice. Meanwhile, I have also been looking for a new cane. The only source for canes I'm familiar with is California canes. For weeks I haven't been able to contact them. Today I got a call back and was told they were out of stock and weren't taking orders. I'm passing this information along to save you the trial and error time if you're in the market for a new cane or for cane tips. Here's the number for a company with a division called Advantage Canes which is also in California. Advantage canes 800-382-5132 I just got helpful advice from a lady who actually answered my first call without putting me on hold even once. like that a rolling cane tip is more for constant contact cane users. I didn't even know such a technique existed. The other tip they sell is like the marshmallow tip. They call it a teardrop tip and it's more for the swing and tap method I use. I made that name up because I have no idea if my technique has a formal name or not. The lady said the rolling tip is heavier and would be more tiring to use if I'm lifting the cane as I walk. She also said folding cane's can be sent free, but rigid canes cost about 8 dollars to be shipped UPS. Now I know that tip that's nearly worn off on my cane is called a pencil tip. I feel very cane savvy now. It's been about a million years since I bought a cane. Mine is battered, dented and bent. I'd like a glitzy, girlie cane, but shiny, straight and new will be nice for more dressy, formal and social destinations. Oh, and the folding cane is $35.85 and rigid canes are $31.85. And, who knew there were canes out there called ID canes. They are small and are for low vision people to carry to show they can't see well. I didn't want to keep the helpful lady on the phone too long, but I was dying to ask how little they were and how the person carried them. Wow, my house is the third from the corner, but I wouldn't get that far with a mini ID cane! I hope this information is useful to someone. It's also OK if you write to tell me where I could have gotten a better buy. I plan to wear out my new cane and will eventually be in the market for a cane again.
