Some good news!  I have talked with engineering about the quality reports
and the ways that all of you use the reports and the spell check function.
We will be working on making the function available again for the volunteer
submission process!  However the reports will not be showing up in the live
collection

 

With that said, we are not sure when this function will be available again.
There were several things about the quality reports that were adversely
affecting the Bookshare system, so we cannot just turn the function back on.
Our engineers will need to rebuild the function, so that it is available
specifically for volunteer use and ensure the old issues will not resurface
again.

 

I will keep everyone posted on the progress of the quality reports.  Thank
you to everyone for providing such helpful feedback for us to be able to
make a case for reinstating the quality reports and spell check.

I like the quality report too, but my reason might be more of a comment on
my own insecurities rather than on its usefulness. The first time I uploaded
a book I had scanned I was very unsure of what I was doing. When I found the
link to the misspelled words I used it and looked for words that were
specific to the book I was uploading, like names of characters or other
words that would be unlikely to appear in other books. When I found them I
was reassured that I was doing the upload properly. The second time I
uploaded one I did the same thing. And I am still doing it. I can assure you
that not once have I ever uploaded the wrong book, but somehow I get
reassurance from looking at that list of misspelled words anyway. Sometimes
it is a little disheartening too. I meticulously check my scans for scanning
errors and correct them. Yet, I have never uploaded a book that once I
looked at the list of misspelled words I did not find errors that I had
missed. By the time I get that far I am usually really tired of working on
the book, so I am not about to abort the upload procedure  and go back to
make the corrections. I decide at that point that the proofreader ought to
have a little correcting to do, so in that way it doesn't really help me
either. In other words, like so many things, it is something that I like
without having any real good reason to like it. In that way it is like the
most popular list and the newly added list. By no means would I choose my
reading material based on the fact that a lot of other people are choosing
it and not on the basis that it had just been added to the collection, but
somehow I feel compelled to peruse those lists every day anyway.

That's not acceptable!!!
The BookShare spell checker accumulates errors and puts them in a table--one
line for each type of misspelling.
MsWord finds them one at a time--often thousands.

I uploaded three books on Thursday or Friday and got the very same thing.
Frankly, I didn't know if they would go through, but they did. It's
disconcerting, for sure!

Hey Guys,

I submitted a book just now, but for what I think is the first time ever, I
didn't get a quality report when I uploaded it, just the generic text about
what makes a book get an Excellent rating and so on; but nothing about how
many misspellings it found, nor how many page breaks. Anyone else seen that?
