[bksvol-discuss] Nancy Drew, Hardy Boys, etc.

When I was trying to find the book Merrill was talking
about (the marooned children on the disappearing
island), I tried Bobbsey Twins, and learned what Jake
said -- the Stratemeyer syndicate not only wrote the
Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys books but also the Bobbsey
Twins, Tom Swift and Rover Boys series. That came as a
shock to me. I knew that later books in the series had
been written by other people and, as Jake said, the
older ones were re-published in more modern terms, but
I didn't know that the original supposed-authors
didn't exist. I also learned that Stratemeyer's
daughters took over after he died.

Is anyone here old enough to remember the Five Little
Peppers series? I think they might be available from
Project Gutenberg (that tells you how old the books
must be, though I enjoyed them in the '40s).
Presumably, since they were wriiten by the Stratemeyer
syndicate they were by the ostensible author.

Cindy

P.S. A long time ago there was a news story --
true--about a girl had been kidnapped and locked in a
trunk and was able to escape from the trunk because of
what she remembered from reading a Nancy Drew mystery.
