Susan, Your example is the way I have always seen footnotes in Braille books, and also the way I was taught when I had typing jobs. Having no space seems messy to me.

I agree with the way you favor but I thought in braille we were supposed to
separate the period from the asterisk such as this:

In his treatise, Jones says whatever. *1

Does anyone know, is using the parenthesis or square brackets a compromise
of some sort?
